Heather & Terry Guest posted a condolence
Thursday, November 17, 2011
My name is Heather Guest. I am Alan’s younger sister. I only knew Alan for a very short time. We met in June of 2010. That may sound a bit odd, but if you don’t know our story, it’s a very wonderful one. When I first spoke to Alan and explained who I was and why I was calling, he listened very carefully but in the background he was directing Holly to check out this ‘person calling from BC’. He was forever the policeman - checking the facts. At the end of our conversation of which I did most of the talking, I only asked two things of him. First, call our sister in California and confirm what I had been telling him and second, call me when he was ready to let me know what his thoughts were. I suspected it could be many months before he would return my call, but it only took Alan a short time to make his decision. When he did call, the first words he said to me were ‘Hello little sister’. You can’t imagine how wonderful it was to hear those three words. I knew right then and there that we were going to be great friends and create wonderful memories. Little did I know how many memories we would create in such a short time. The first time we met was in Vancouver in February 2011 when Holly and Alan came to visit us. We immediately felt a bond. It was an emotional & wonderful time of ‘getting to know each other’. I had the privilege of being included in Alan’s 65th birthday celebration this past summer in Aylmer and sharing this event with his wonderful family. He adored his wife Holly, son Jeff and daughter Carrie. Alan’s grandchildren meant the world to him. You could see in his heart that he loved them all. For me finding Alan was a miracle; meeting him was a joy; getting to know him was a pleasure; having him for my brother was an honor; him not being here, unbearable! Our Journey together was too short, but the memories we made were unforgettable. My Brother - I love him and will always miss him. Heather November 2011

Tuesday, November 15, 2011
My heart is breaking again. Holly and family, our sincerest condolences. Alan was a board memeber at SMRS for a few years and very active sharing his knowledge and experiences. His love of railroads and all things historic was exciting. The time he took to make sure he was at meetings several hours away from home was time consuming and tiring, which showed his dedication to the positions that he held. I know your heart is breaking too. He will be remembered, because his love for people will never fade. Take care Holly, and his children. He loved you all, as he enjoyed talking about you.
