I was a teacher at Davenport and had the privilege of teaching Merle .He was an inquisitive student and I quite enjoyed our discussions. It is always a shock when I have to read an obituary of a former student. It does put life in perspective

My prayers are with you during this time of loss. Merle coached me when I played baseball in Aylmer. I definately was not the best player on the team, however Merle always gave encourgement and support. I will always remember the fun times I had with him.

Hey Scott, please accept our condolences from Edmonton.I never got to know Merle very well, or yourself for that matter. We were all so young when our parents were good friends. Most of us grow up resembling our parents and I'm positive Merle was a good man just like your father Bruce. Very sorry for your loss. John, Kim, Brett and Corey MacGillivary

Sorry Scott... about your brother Merle... i have a memory of him... i thought i might relate... it always came up first whenever i thought about him... and even though there's many years between when i saw him last... i did think of him... and you as well... from time to time... wondering... what roads you went down... the memory won't assuage your grief... i know i'm not able to do that... and i can't find a reason... as to why i should even bother to offer it... except to say... in his own way... he did leave an impression on me... it was a summer afternoon... and we were at my place... i don't remember the details... ( by my place i mean my parents on ross street ) we were only 10 or 12 at the time... but we were very bored... that much i remember... and Merle found one of my hardy boy books... and he started reading it... and as he began reading the book... i was quite baffled because... i had never read the books myself... i got one every christmas... but i never read them... and i kept at him... asking why ? ... or how ? in the dead of summer... he could resort to reading a book... and he answered me... in such a way that... it wasn't needful for him to break away from his reading... so i left him to my book... and i... can't rember what i did that afternoon...

Scott, we are deeply sorry for your loss. Our prayers go to you and your family. Times like this cannot be measured in sorrow but only in celebration. I am thinking of all the good times Merle provided us, whether it was with baseball, hockey or Port Burwell Provincial Park. There are many others, embrace them and celebrate his life. Again our deepest sympathy. Bob & Patti Rabaey

Annette and Dennis - We just heard the news tonight. We're sorry that we couldn't pay our respects in person. Always know that Merle could not have asked for truer friends than you. You will be in our thoughts tonight. Take care. Love, Patti & Mike
