Obituary of Shirley Hicks

Grief is love with no where to go.
Our beloved mom, Shirley Ann Hicks, born in London UK October 12,1934 died May 19th 2020 in London, Canada. At age 4 she moved to Llandudno,Wales. Mom forever after had a love of all things Welsh and shared that enthusiasm with us. Back in London at age 16, she met the love of her life, Johnny Hicks. Mom’s adventure began quickly as in 1953 she joined my dad to begin married life in Canada. There was no basic training provided to mom but she was the perfect companion for an army man. She moved us and the household whenever and to wherever dad’s postings took us. She was the quiet support to my dad’s big personality. Dad made the friends and mom maintained the friendships. They had 63 happy years together before Dad passed away in 2016. Mom never stopped missing him.
Mom had many happy busy years. She was a valued member of the Central Processing department at Belleville General and loved to host the department wedding and baby showers. She was part of an active social circle of army and non-army friends. She joined dad exercising at the Harbour Club, and when it closed, moved on to the YMCA where she formed strong friendships with her Aquafit ladies. She enjoyed time with Tai Chi friends. She and dad joined in on a variety of bus tours that explored North America, in addition to travelling around the world independently with friends.
In 2014 Mom was diagnosed with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, an autoimmune disease of unknown cause and with currently only research treatments. It stole her from us.
Mom raised us with kindness, perseverance, and strength of character. She died comforted knowing family and friends will carry her in their hearts and thoughts forever. She leaves behind her loving children: Jo-Anne Vandierendonck (Terry), Stephen Hicks (Audrey) and Suzanne Keating (John); her grandchildren: Kate (Jason), Laura (Jon), Stephanie (Chris), Mitchell & Hannah and her great grandchildren Miles & Reid.
Donations may be made to the Quinte Humane Society or the Canadian Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation. kebbelfuneralhome.com
