I worked at camp for two years with Cheerio. I was a CIT with him, and a counsellor the following year. Where he was, people were. He was always with someone, be it staff or camper. He had an aura about him that just made people want to talk to him. And he could always make them smile or laugh. I remember seeing him with the campers, and thinking how good he was with them. I didn't know him super well, but I know that he had a heart of gold and a beautiful spirit. Rest in peace Cheerio. You will be very missed

Tyler was incredible. He was caring, kind, funny, a joy to be around. I only knew Tyler for a short period of time but we really connected and I knew he had a good heart. He told me about his love of space and how he loved being a camp counsellor to the kids. I’m very disheartened by the news of this. My condolences go out to his family, friends and girlfriend. Tyler, you will be so missed. Lots of love! Rest east beautiful soul❤️

A few months ago, Tyler came through my lane at Independent. We hadn’t seen each other since high school, so we caught each other up on our lives. He was so smiley and kind, asking me questions about school and life in general, just like he was in high school. I remember telling my friends how happy it made me to see him doing well. That conversation made my day. I didn’t know him well, but he radiated so much joy. Such a sweet, pure soul.

I have known Tyler for a long time. We went to public school together. We were in a 3/4 split class together. Then I found out years later, he applied to the YWCA. & I worked with him for a bit in 2020 and it was such a fun time. That following summer, we worked together and he always made me laugh. He made me smile, oh how I could go back in time to see that smile and hear that laugh. Tyler, you were such an amazing man. You never ever failed to make others around you, feel better. I wish I could have done the same for you. Rest in peace my friend.

I remembered taking this picture of Tyler’s shirt during the summer of 2021 because I liked the saying. He and I were having a hallway talk about leadership while preparing for summer camp. Going to hold this message in my heart this week. Thinking of all of Tyler’s family, friends, colleagues, and loved ones.

For all the times music has brought so much joy into our home, none of it has ever compared to the pure joy we share with those people that come to share it with us. That love, happiness and joyousness is amplified beyond measure when we can share that with other "Music People" and their "Music Families". Music people get it.
The boys describe it this way "Looking up from our spots at guitar and bass and seeing Tyler and the Smith family taking up one entire corner of the studio space in the basement". The music community is a small, tight-knit one and it's that much smaller and tighter in a small town like ours. We never take for granted, being able to come together, share our successes, make and share special moments. Sharing these with our families makes them that much better.
Our basement, our studio space and our hearts are a little emptier today.
Tyler, you are forever with us.

I worked with Tyler (known as Cheerio at camp) at Pearce Williams for a number of years, and he was truly a gentle, kind and good humoured person. He built beautiful relationships with participants in Pearce’s integration program, and one in particular comes to mind. A young boy who we’ll call Carson, who had never been to camp before, attended a week of “overnight camp”, but did not sleep over, too nervous to stay. When his parents dropped him off each day he was always in a big pair of rain boots, no matter the weather. Carson loved checking the weather every day and always kept up with the reports. He didn’t like to get close to the dining hall at mealtimes, where too many kids were gathered at once. He was nervous and very curious, but he was lucky to get Cheerio as his counsellor. Cheerio quickly embraced Carson’s frequent questions in such a breezy, lighthearted way, always following along with Carson’s curiosity without a second of questioning. They quickly developed a tight bond and Cheerio came up with activities that drew upon Carson’s unique interests, making scavenger hunts for him, playing weather games, and even “walking out an acre” using a measuring wheel because Carson wondered what an acre looked like. He even helped me plan a “water balloon mission” where Carson got to “friendly prank” Cheerio with a water battle. Eventually, Cheerio helped Carson build friendships with the other boys in his cabin group, and every day, Carson and Cheerio would sit a little bit closer to the dining hall at mealtimes. By the end of the week, Carson was eating in the dining hall for every meal, and even stayed overnight for a sleepout, hugely in thanks to Cheerio’s encouragement. I have such vivid memories of watching the two of them talk and it always seemed so natural. Cheerio contributed to creating camp magic for Carson, and I know that he will hold onto those memories forever. This is a testament to what a gentle and wonderful person Cheerio was. I will always remember him in this way.

Ty, I am honoured to have known you. Through camp and through high school, you were always someone I could count on. I’m sorry I didn’t reach out more. I wish I could tell you how much I appreciate you. As an advocate, as a comedian, as a camp counsellor, and as a human, you have been one of the most impactful of them all.
Cheerio had this magical ability to comfort everyone around him just by walking in the room. You knew when he walked in that you could count on him.. For a smile, a laugh, a shoulder to cry on or a person to vent to (even over social media), he was always there.
To Josh, Grace, and family- please know that we cherish our moments with Tyler. He truly was one of the best.

Tyler Smiths light shined ever so bright! I remember him singing and dancing around the fireside, singing camp songs, doing skits, and leading games and activities. His late night sing songs near the tents at Wilderness, impromptu birthday parties hosted in the wildershed, and so so many wonderful and creative sessions and ideas. Going to concerts and sharing his love in musical diversity. His love for the great outdoors and his pure sense of comedic relief for any tense moment. His love for meme pages and sharing comedy continued throughout the years (even after camp has come and gone).
Every moment with Tyler (AKA. Cheerio) was a blessing, I am so glad to have met him. Above all, Tyler's kind heart, genuine spirit, and love for camp and others were what made him truly special. He had a way of making everyone feel seen and valued, and his impact on those around him will not be forgotten. He was a true source of light for all of those around him. I extend my heartfelt sympathies to Tyler's family and loved ones as they mourn the loss of a truly remarkable individual.

I met Tyler at Pearce Williams summer camp, where I called him by his nickname, Cheerio. He was a source of light and laughter, and new how to lift up the spirits of everyone around him. He cared deeply about World Camp and was a mentor and friend to so many campers. Years later, we would still keep in touch through a group chat and social media, and I remember him checking on me when my mental health was low. He cared so, so much for others and the world. I wish I could tell him now how much the world loves him back. My deepest condolences to his family and loved ones, he will be missed more than words can express.
