I am so sorry for the profound loss of Doctor Van Deusen. I appreciate the profound impact he had in my life. I have nothing but gratitude for the positive impact he had and he was the only one to believe in me and the possible so long ago. Just heard of John’s death. We met in grade nine over fifty years ago. A truly gentle soul who was taken too early from his family. My condolences to his entire family. Your grief is shared by everyone who ever met John.

Family of John, I just learned of his passing today (Nov 5, 2023) and am saddened to hear of it. I knew John for almost 20 years and valued the infrequent but always enjoyable and helpful conversations we would have about professional practice issues and business ownership when we crossed paths, most typically at events sponsored by the Ontario Psychological Association. Having embarked on the challenging path of self-employment as a clinical psychologist 20 years ago, I first learned about John from his brother, whom I consulted about renovating some office space I was considering leasing for my practice. I recall talking with John by phone then, and how open and free he was with helpful advice for an early-career colleague who was following the same path he had taken. I was always very pleased that he remembered me in subsequent years and remained open to chatting when we would run into each other in person. I always thought of him as a really nice guy.
I’m very sorry for his passing and for your loss.
— Dr. Ian Shulman, PhD, CPsych, Oakville, Ontario.

Dear family and colleagues (family also) of Dr John... I just learned today - October 13th - of Dr Johns sudden departure from this world of ours and remain in shock, deep sadness and forever gratitude for how and what he did to help me through a very dark time and guided me unchartered waters . His teachings and sharing of knowledge brought brightness to myself and other family members. He spoke 'my language' which included some 'colourful and vivid' phrases and made me so comfortable to open myself to reveal the horror and despair due to a child with mental condition. I will be forever grateful for his honesty, floral wisdom, and sense of humour ... He has left a huge Legacy of trust, human kindness and commitment for helping make this a better world !

I'm writing today to express my deepest condolences to John's entire family. I met John through his practice and had the utmost respect firstly for him as person and a provider of life guidance for me. We developed a relationship that felt more like friends than professional. His natural warmth and positive outlook was contagious and made me realize that there were much bigger things to worry about than my small issues I dealt with. From the first time I met John he openly expressed a tragedy that he and the family had experienced. It was a confidence that made me trust him and respect him for telling me.
I will truly miss his engaging conversation as we both had a love of driving, him his motorcycle and me going to Europe to take delivery of a much coveted sports car. The conversation that unfortunately we will never have.
Prayers for staying strong as John was taken way far too young and the world won't be the same without him.
Yours Truly,
Stewart Miller,
A friend and admirirer of him.

John was my first mentor when I was in grad school. Thirty some years later I still work to emulate him in my practice and life. He was so kind and patient with Clint’s, staff, and me. Thank you, John.

My deepest condolences to the VanDeursen family and my sincerest apologies for missing the service. I met John when i was 17 or 18 at his practice. I lived in the neighbourhood and i would see him regularly while i worked at Loblaws. John knew my passion was to become a Police Officer. As i grew up and moved out i was his neighbour down on Victoria Park and we would chat from time to time. I remember when i got hired by Toronto Police i went over and told him and the smile on his face i will never forget. After 3 years on the job with its immense stressors i began to see John again. Our last conversation was about martial arts, working out, and maintaining a work life balance for longevity. I will miss you John. Until we meet again my friend.

Sorrow knows no bounds. John was on loan to earth to remind us of what a truly honourable man is composed of. Very few of us measure up.
John was always able to find the door in to my most complex and difficult patients. We had many hilarious moments problem solving the absurd. Did I say these patients were challenging?
John was always calm, compassionate and unflappable. We will all miss him.

John was lovely and wonderful as a professional colleague and friend. His loss leaves a big hole... The world is better for having had him in it and poorer for having lost him too soon. My thoughts, prayers, and love to his family, close colleagues, and patients. This was entirely too early... What can I say? Hold those you cherish close and let them know you care for them. Love to all.
